English for Travel and Tourism (ETT) prepares students for the competitive work environment of the international tourism industry.
Course Overview:
This program is designed for students of tourism and experienced professionals working in hospitality and tourism. Students learn effective communication and interpersonal skills, which are an essential job requirement in this industry. The syllabus includes a variety of industry-specific contexts, to represent the diversity of the travel industry today and to reflect the global working environment of tourism. The program covers a different topic in the area of tourism each week—focusing on real-life situations and issues that tourism professionals face in their work. This ensures students are ready to communicate with people from around the world, using English confidently and fluently in the workplace.
Speaking Skills
Each unit in this program includes speaking practice, because communication is an important aspect of the global hospitality and tourism industry. Each week, students complete communicative activities in groups and pairs to practice work-related speaking tasks. These activities are skill-based, so students practice everything from customer service and selling tour packages to clients to handling difficult people and leading a tour. Pronunciation practice is also included so students improve their fluency.
Vocabulary
Each week, students build their functional language skills and develop their vocabulary for a variety of tourism contexts to meet the communicative needs of tourism professionals. Students also improve their grammatical accuracy and their understanding of how to convey meaning with grammatical choices.
Reading and Listening
The program textbook uses authentic readings and interviews to provide real-life examples of material that students will encounter in the tourism industry. Excerpts from newspapers and magazines ensure that students read and learn up-to-date information on important travel destinations.
Presentations and Testing
To receive a Certificate for this program, students must successfully complete the course requirements and receive a Pass on all tests. In addition, each week there is a written assignment and an in-class presentation on a work-related theme
